Things to Consider Before Pushing Ahead with a Home Extension

May 22, 2019 //  by Geoff

There are many valid reasons why homeowners would like to pursue a home extension project. Some would like to have a bigger space for each family member to enjoy or increase the value of their property. Extending your home can be an overwhelming process to undergo since many factors need to be considered before getting started. From the initial planning, necessary permits, and budget allocation to logistics, there are many things that you need to keep in mind. Here are some tips to ensure that you are bound to have a successful home extension project.

Adhere to building permits and other construction rules

Before getting started with the home extension and other renovations, you need to make sure that all of the paperwork is ready before you start construction. Building permits ensure that your building meets the set requirements in terms of safety and structural integrity. If you are building a fence or building a new wall, then you should first consult with a party wall surveyor to ensure that you are not trespassing in your neighbour’s yard.

Discuss things with your architect

Before starting the work, it is best to sit down with your architect and discuss your plans for the house. Specify how many rooms you want to add, and how you would like the place to look. You should also be open to possibilities of rebuilding some parts of the house instead of attaching extensions. Things may become more practical and economical when building the structure from scratch.

Ask for recommendations

When starting a home extension project, you will need to hire a reputable contractor that will take charge of all the construction work. Make sure to hire the right people by asking for some recommendations from friends and family members. Make sure that your contractor is licensed and insured, for your peace of mind.

Schedule the project in advance

Home extension projects can usually take a couple of weeks or months to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. The best time to have a construction project done is during the summer so the workers can do their work more efficiently. You can start planning three months before summer, giving you more time to either rearrange your home furniture or either look for a temporary place to stay. Living in the construction site can cause the delay of the project, and it also poses a danger to all family members because of the mess, dust and electrical wiring scattered around the area.

Set a realistic budget for the project

Home improvements and renovations can cost a lot of money depending on the type of changes that you want to add to your property. If you are planning for a complicated project, then expect to shell out more money. You and your spouse should agree on a certain amount before proceeding with the project.

Home improvement projects can be quite tricky; that is why you need to prepare in advance.
