What is an IP Address and How Does It Work?

June 22, 2023 //  by Geoff

In the vast digital landscape of the internet, every device connected to the network requires a unique identifier to communicate with other devices. This identifier is known as an IP address, which stands for Internet Protocol address. An IP address serves as a digital address, allowing devices to locate and communicate with each other over the internet. In this article, we delve into the world of IP addresses, exploring what is an IP address and how they work.

Understanding IP Addresses

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It consists of a series of numbers separated by periods, such as 192.168.0.1. This format is known as IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4), which is the most commonly used format today. However, with the increasing number of devices connecting to the internet, a newer format called IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is being gradually implemented to provide a larger pool of available addresses.

Functioning of IP Addresses

When you type a website address into your browser or click a link, your device sends a request to the server hosting that website. This request is made using the IP address of the server. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how IP addresses work:

Request Initiation: You initiate a request to access a website or any online resource.

DNS Translation: Your device sends the website address to a DNS (Domain Name System) server, which translates the human-readable domain name (e.g., www.example.com) into an IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.1) associated with that domain.

Routing: Once your device receives the IP address, it uses the address to route the request through the network to reach the destination server.

Request Fulfillment: The destination server receives the request and processes it, fetching the requested web page or resource.

Response Transmission: The server sends the requested web page or resource back to your device using its IP address.

Types of IP Addresses

There are two primary types of IP addresses:

Public IP Address: A public IP address is assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and is unique across the internet. It identifies your device on the internet, allowing it to communicate with other devices globally. Public IP addresses are used by websites, servers, and other devices accessible from the internet.

Private IP Address: A private IP address is assigned to devices within a private network, such as your home or office network. It allows devices to communicate with each other within the network but is not directly accessible from the internet. Private IP addresses are typically used for computers, smartphones, printers, and other devices connected to a local network.

IP addresses are the backbone of internet communication, enabling devices to find and interact with each other across the digital realm. They serve as unique identifiers for devices, allowing information to be transmitted between them in the form of requests and responses. Understanding what an IP address is and how it works is fundamental to comprehend the functioning of the internet and the way devices connect and communicate in the online world. Whether you’re browsing the web, sending emails, or streaming content, the concept of IP addresses underlies every online activity you engage in.
