Tips To Prep Your Car For A Long Road Trip

May 20, 2019 //  by Geoff

Before you head out on your epic road adventures this year, make sure you can drive with peace of mind. Peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is in sound mechanical condition is vital to your ability to relax and enjoy your vacation.

If you arm yourself with knowledge, you and your travel party will be in a much safer situation on the roads. Take a quick peek at this brief checklist, featuring some of the most important things you should check on your vehicle before heading out for a long road trip.

Get repairs done a few weeks before your trip

Most people know when their vehicle needs a certain mechanical fix for a little while before they actually get the vehicle in the shop. It’s not uncommon for this procrastination to be the cause of a roadside breakdown.

Get any mechanical issues on your vehicle fixed a few weeks before you hit the road, just in case there is a need for additional adjustments. If you are able to do the work yourself, make sure you get your replacement parts from a trusted source. You may also want to look into the warranty offered on the parts.

Get a thorough oil change

What we mean by “thorough” is that you should go to a place that does more than simply changing your oil. A thorough oil change involves several different aspects of your vehicle.

You’ll need your oil and air filter changed, your windshield wipers checked, and all of your vehicle’s fluids topped off. If you pay for the top grade oil change, you can rest assured that your vehicle will get the best care.

Check to make sure your tires are in good shape

If you’re going to be putting the rubber to the road, you need to make sure there’s enough rubber there to get you safely to your destination and back home. The best way to check your tire tread for efficiency is to grab a penny.

Place the penny in between the tread on your tire. If the depth goes to Lincoln’s eyes, you’re good. If the depth is only to the tip of his head, then you are in the danger zone.

Pack your glove box with the proper goods

You may not consider packing your glove box, but there are some very vital materials that should be present in your glove. You need your vehicle’s registration and proof of insurance within reach should you get pulled over.

You may also want to keep a copy of your vehicle manual just in case small repairs are needed along your journey. There may be signal lights that come on as your drive that you know nothing about, and your manual can help dispel the mystery.
