3 tips for protecting your home during a big storm

All seasons can bring with them intense storms. So to make sure that you and your family will be safe in your home despite what kinds of storms come your way, you’ll want to take preventative action that will help you protect your home from the type of storms and extreme weather that’s likely to come to your area.

To help you in doing this successfully, here are three tips for protecting your home during a big storm.

Check Around Your Home First

The first place that you should check on when preparing your home for an incoming storm is the exterior. If your home has a strong exterior and there aren’t too many dangers and hazards outside of your home, you can rest a little easier on the inside of your home during the coming storm.

As part of this, you’ll want to make sure that everything attached to your home is secured well, including things like storm windows and gutters. Otherwise, these items could easily be ripped off of the home and become projectiles. Additionally, if you have patio furniture or other items that you keep on your property outside of the home, you’ll either want to move these items inside or secure them down so that they don’t get blown around and knocked into your home.

Protect Your Windows

The windows of your home are some of the most vulnerable places that you’ll want to protect as you prepare for a coming storm.

If you’re able to, you may want to consider replacing your current windows with hurricane glass so that they won’t be as easily broken in a storm. But if this isn’t a possibility for you, you can install things like storm windows or even put up wood planks to cover the windows and protect the glass from damage that could come as a result of the storm.

Make A Plan For Keeping Water Out

The water that comes with many storms can be what causes the greatest damage to homes. When water gets into a property, it can cause all kinds of damage, from ruining the floors and appliances to creating an unsafe space where mold and other hazards can abound.

If you’re able to, try to live in a place that’s on higher ground so that you don’t have to worry as much about water running off into your home. You can also divert water away from your home with paths and downspouts. Or, if you don’t have these things available to you, moving valuable items off of the floor of your home and having sandbags on-hand to help keep water out can often work well.

If there’s a big storm coming your way that you need to protect yourself from, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you with this.
